Manchester City have suffered another setback in their chase of Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
City’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Everton on Monday left their hopes of retaining the title hanging in the balance, with the team no longer in control of their own destiny as the season enters its final stretch. The result strengthened Arsenal’s chances of winning their first league title since 2004.
The situation could have been worse for Pep Guardiola’s side if not for a 97th-minute equaliser from Jeremy Doku, which rescued a point at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
City were once again without influential midfielder Rodri, who has now missed three consecutive matches due to a groin injury sustained late in the crucial 2-1 victory over Arsenal.
Speaking before the Everton clash, manager Pep Guardiola said Rodri was improving but had yet to return to full training. Nearly a week later, the Spaniard remains absent from training and is expected to miss Saturday’s Premier League encounter against Brentford.
City now face mounting pressure to win their remaining four league matches while hoping Arsenal slip up in their final three games.
Rodri did not participate in Thursday’s training session. Guardiola is expected to provide a fresh update during Friday’s pre-match press conference. In Rodri’s absence, Nico Gonzalez and Mateo Kovacic are likely to partner Bernardo Silva in midfield.
There was, however, some positive news for City, with defenders Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol returning to training. Gvardiol has been out since January, while Dias has not featured since March, although both are still unlikely to play against Brentford.
