The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken a bold step to uphold professional ethics by constituting Ethics and Disciplinary Committees across Nigeria’s geo-political zones, as announced in a letter dated June 3, 2025. Addressed to all NBA members, the letter emphasizes the association’s commitment to maintaining high standards under Section 12 of the NBA Constitution.
The committees, divided into NBA (Abuja) and Disciplinary Committee (South-East), are tasked with investigating professional impropriety and misconduct. The Abuja committee, chaired by Adeboro Adamson, SAN, includes notable members like Bernard Nnafighe and Musa Jacob Haruna as Secretary. The South-East committee, led by Emeka Anenugwu, SAN, features members such as Ikechukwu Onuoma, SAN, and Janet Agbu as Secretary.
The NBA outlined strict guidelines for the committees, emphasizing virtual hearings for accessibility, while mandating decisions based on submitted documents unless a prima facie case is established. Respondents must explicitly state their reliance on documents, and panels are required to provide detailed reasoning for their decisions.
Additionally, the committees will handle cases involving written witness statements on oath to ensure transparency.
This move signals the NBA’s renewed focus on ethical conduct within the legal profession, aiming to restore public confidence and address misconduct head-on.
