Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria following a decision reached at the party’s national convention held in Abuja on Saturday.
Announcing the outcome on its official platform, the party stated that its 2027 presidential candidate would serve only a single four-year term, while the 2031 presidential ticket has been reserved for Northern Nigeria.
The convention gathered key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other party stakeholders. The meeting is also expected to ratify recent decisions taken by the party’s National Executive Committee.
Issues scheduled for deliberation include zoning arrangements, approval of amendments to the party constitution, and the election of new national executives.
In recent weeks, the NDC has experienced a wave of defections from other political parties, especially the African Democratic Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party.
Earlier this week, 17 members of the House of Representatives formally defected from the ADC to the NDC during plenary. Among them were Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Thaddeus Attah, Lilian Orogbu, Afam Ogene, and several others.
The lawmakers’ move followed the formal defection of Obi and Kwankwaso to the NDC from the ADC. Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Kwankwaso, former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, were presented with NDC membership cards after a closed-door meeting with party leaders.
They were received into the party by Seriake Dickson, a national leader of the NDC.
Explaining his departure from the ADC, Obi cited worsening political tensions, internal party crises, and increasing interference within party structures. He described Nigeria’s political environment as toxic, alleging that intimidation, insecurity, and pressure against genuine reform-minded politicians have become widespread.
