Nearly 500 Ebola cases have now been confirmed in the deadly outbreak raging in central Africa, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) overview released on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
In its daily update, the WHO reported 452 confirmed cases, including 82 deaths, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the outbreak was declared three weeks ago on May 15. Neighbouring Uganda has recorded 19 confirmed cases and two deaths. This brings the regional total to 471 cases and 84 deaths marking a sharp increase of 100 cases and 20 deaths from the previous day.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments, has prompted the WHO to declare it an international public health emergency. Officials warn that without strong and immediate public health interventions, the epidemic could grow to rival the scale of the 2014 West Africa outbreak, which recorded over 28,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths.
“The outbreak is moving fast, and we are still playing catch-up,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He stressed the urgency of stopping the virus in its current locations while supporting neighbouring countries to quickly detect and respond to any new cases.
In response, the WHO and the African CDC on Friday launched a $518-million six-month plan to combat the outbreak. The plan focuses on boosting surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention, and cross-border coordination.
Ebola, which spreads through close contact and bodily fluids, has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa over the past 50 years. The current outbreak is believed to have been spreading undetected for some time before its official declaration.
