Nigeria has once again failed to meet the 1.5 million barrels per day crude oil production quota assigned by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
According to the latest National Liquid Hydrocarbon Production Report released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission on Tuesday, the country’s average daily crude oil production in April stood at roughly 1.4 million barrels per day, representing about 99 per cent of its OPEC target.
When condensates were included, total oil production averaged around 1.6 million barrels per day during the month.
The figures come as the Federal Government and oil industry stakeholders continue efforts to raise production to 2 million barrels per day in order to improve revenue generation, boost foreign exchange inflows, and support the implementation of the 2026 budget.
Despite a slight improvement in April compared to previous months, Nigeria has still not been able to consistently meet its OPEC production allocation. Total output also remained below the 1.84 million barrels per day benchmark projected in the 2026 budget.
The report showed that Nigeria has now remained below its OPEC crude oil quota for nine consecutive months since July 2025.
Data from the commission revealed that combined crude oil and condensate production reached a peak of 1.85 million barrels per day during April, while the lowest daily production level was 1.46 million barrels per day. The April performance marked an improvement from March’s total production figure of 1.55 million barrels per day.
Nigeria’s oil sector has continued to face major challenges, including crude theft, pipeline vandalism, ageing infrastructure, and limited upstream investment, all of which have affected production capacity.
Although crude output rose slightly to 1.38 million barrels per day in March from 1.31 million barrels per day in February, the country still fell short of its OPEC quota by about 117,000 barrels per day.
Production had earlier declined sharply in February after a brief recovery in January 2026, when output increased from 1.422 million barrels per day in December 2025 to 1.46 million barrels per day.
Throughout 2025, Nigeria failed to meet its OPEC quota in nine different months, only surpassing or meeting the target in January, June, and July.
