Abuja — The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for their roles in the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Justice Salim Ibrahim convicted Abdulrazak Umar (a.k.a. Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (a.k.a. Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (a.k.a. Abu Itisar) on multiple terrorism-related charges after they pleaded guilty in court.
The convicts, all from Suleja Local Government Area in Niger State, faced a 10-count charge that included terrorism, kidnapping, concealment of information, incitement, and illegal mining.
They admitted membership in Darul Salam, an affiliate of the proscribed terrorist group Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), and acknowledged concealing vital information about the masterminds of the attack that took place between January and May 2026.
While pleading not guilty to four of the counts, the defendants admitted to the rest. Umar additionally pleaded guilty to charges of providing training and instructions to terrorists via a WhatsApp group named “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace.”
After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, Justice Ibrahim reviewed the evidence, including voluntary extra-judicial statements recorded electronically in the presence of their lawyer and sentenced the three men to life imprisonment on the counts to which they pleaded guilty.
The trial on the remaining contested charges has been adjourned to September 16 and 17, 2026.
