The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the presidency to declare a state of emergency in the state, citing what it describes as a total collapse of governance at the grassroots level.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the party accused Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration of rendering local governments ineffective and non-functional. Comparing Adeleke’s leadership to that of Rivers State’s suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the APC claimed, “There is no infraction that Fubara was accused of that Adeleke is not guilty of.”
The party alleged that governance in Osun is being run by proxy, with the governor’s family exerting undue influence over state affairs. “The governor’s family has hijacked the administration, making decisions that should be left to elected officials,” the statement read.
The APC also accused Adeleke of attempting to unlawfully remove the state’s Chief Judge in 2023, leading to a prolonged closure of state-owned courts following protests by the Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN). The party criticized the governor’s handling of traditional institutions, alleging that he dismissed several traditional rulers appointed by his predecessor, former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, in what it described as a politically motivated move.
Furthermore, the party condemned Adeleke’s alleged refusal to comply with a February 10, 2025, Court of Appeal ruling reinstating APC-backed local government chairmen and councillors. It accused the governor of inciting violence against the reinstated officials, which allegedly resulted in the death of Remi Abass, a local government chairman in Irewole. The statement also linked Adeleke to electoral violence during the 2022 and 2023 elections, stating, “The bloodshed that accompanied the 2022 governorship and 2023 general elections remains fresh in the minds of Osun people.”
The APC further criticized Adeleke for dismissing thousands of workers hired by the previous administration, including teachers and health workers. It also denounced the billions of naira allegedly spent on the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) for local government elections, calling the exercise a “wasteful” endeavor that ignored federal directives.
According to the APC, local government operations in Osun have collapsed under Adeleke’s administration, depriving residents of essential services. “Students, job seekers, and residents needing identification letters cannot access essential local government services,” the party stated, adding that “Osun State has never had it this bad. Emergency rule is the only way to restore governance.”
In response, the Osun State Government strongly condemned the APC’s call for emergency rule.
State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the demand as “callous and unlawful,” asserting that the situations in Osun and Rivers State were fundamentally different. He accused the APC of attempting to destabilize the state for political gain.
Alimi further alleged that the APC lacked the political support to challenge Governor Adeleke at the polls and was instead seeking power through undemocratic means. He also referenced recent incidents in which APC members allegedly attempted to enforce “non-existent” court judgments to reinstate their local government officials, a move he claimed nearly plunged the state into crisis.
The political tension in Osun continues to escalate as both parties trade accusations over governance, judiciary independence, and local administration.
