The Communist Party of Benin has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as foreign military interference in the country. The reaction follows reports of an attempted military coup on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
In a statement released on Monday, the party expressed outrage over the presence of foreign troops, said to be from France and Nigeria, insisting that their deployment violates the sovereignty of Benin. The group described the incident as an insult to the nation and a humiliation to its political and military leadership.
According to the PCB, verified information confirms that French President Emmanuel Macron requested assistance from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, leading to Nigeria’s involvement in the operation. The party also claimed that more Nigerian soldiers allegedly crossed into Benin through the Seme border to reinforce the mission.
The PCB warned that the development amounts to a complete erosion of national autonomy. It argued that the foreign activity places Benin under external supervision and risks reducing the country to the status of a French controlled territory.
The party called on citizens to reject what it termed an occupation and demanded the immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces.
