The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to investigate and sanction lawyers accused of deliberately twisting a recent Court of Appeal ruling concerning the party’s internal leadership crisis.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the PDP accused certain individuals claiming to represent an Interim National Working Committee (NWC) of misinterpreting the appellate court’s decision for political gain.
The party specifically referenced a June 3 press statement signed by legal practitioner Comrade Ini Ememobong, which it claimed contained conclusions that contradicted the actual judgment.
According to the PDP, the Court of Appeal did not nullify the legality of the party’s caretaker committee or the current National Working Committee that emerged from it. Instead, the court dismissed the appeal on technical grounds, describing it as academic and an attempt to re-open issues already settled by higher courts.
“The Certified True Copy of the judgment is clear and leaves no room for the false narratives being peddled in the media and on social media,” the statement said.
The PDP further denied claims that the Court of Appeal made any pronouncements regarding A.K. Ajibade (SAN) or Senator Samuel Anyanwu, insisting no such declarations exist in the judgment. It reaffirmed the validity of the Federal High Court judgment delivered in Ibadan on January 30, 2026.
The party also raised concerns over the circulation of allegedly manipulated excerpts of the ruling on social media and called on security agencies to investigate the source of these documents.
The PDP warned that deliberate misrepresentation of court decisions by legal practitioners undermines the integrity of the judiciary and erodes public confidence in the justice system. It appealed to media organisations to verify court documents and seek accurate interpretations before publishing reports on judicial matters.
Describing the judiciary as “the last hope of the common man,” the party urged the public and party stakeholders to disregard claims that the Court of Appeal had invalidated the current leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
The PDP stressed that failure to act against those distorting judicial pronouncements could encourage misinformation and weaken democratic institutions.
