Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday held a private meeting with members of the Peoples Democratic Party National Working Committee in Abuja as efforts continue to resolve the lingering crisis within the party.
The meeting took place at Jonathan’s office in the Maitama district of the Federal Capital Territory. It was attended by the PDP NWC led by its chairman Dr Tanimu Turaki SAN, alongside some state chairmen of the party.
Party sources said the engagement forms part of a broader consultation with key leaders aimed at restoring unity and ending internal divisions that have plagued the PDP for several years.
Members of the NWC and party officials reportedly arrived at the former president’s office around 6 pm for the closed door discussions.
The PDP has remained embroiled in crisis since the conduct of its presidential primary ahead of the 2023 general elections, which produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flag bearer.
The internal disagreements later contributed to the party’s loss in the presidential election and deepened divisions across its leadership structure.
At present, the party is split into two factions. One faction is led by the NWC under Tanimu Turaki, while the other group is headed by a caretaker committee chaired by Abdulrahman Muhammed.
The Abdulrahman Muhammed faction is believed to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Party leaders hope that consultations with senior figures such as Jonathan will help chart a path toward reconciliation and stability within the opposition party.
