The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has predicted that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) will become stronger than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections. However, he asserts that the party will ultimately fail to defeat President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, on Monday, Ayodele warned that the influx of politicians into SDP would be driven by personal interests rather than a genuine bid to challenge the ruling party. He cautioned the party against allowing greed and poor candidate selection to undermine its chances.
“SDP will be stronger than PDP and Labour. It will be the party to watch, but greed will make it fail in 2027. Those decamping there are not focused on winning power but enriching themselves,” Ayodele stated.
He urged SDP to be vigilant about its growing membership, emphasizing the importance of selecting capable candidates rather than allowing emotions or sentiment to dictate decisions.
Ayodele also dismissed the idea that a simple coalition of opposition parties could lead to victory in 2027, stating that only a strong, well-structured alliance could pose a real challenge to Tinubu’s re-election.
“The 2027 presidency cannot be won through a mere coalition; it requires a solid alliance. Coalitions can break, but a strong alliance can endure and succeed. Defeating Tinubu is no easy task—he is politically strong, and the usual political party structures will not work. A new alliance, under a new name, must be formed,” he said.
Additionally, the cleric warned the opposition against relying on governors to form an alliance, predicting that they would ultimately betray the cause. He advised that any opposition movement should be built around the people rather than political leaders.
“I warn them not to depend on governors, as they will betray any coalition. The alliance must be built around the people because some governors are already out of it,” Ayodele added, specifically mentioning Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno and Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as those unlikely to participate.
Ayodele’s remarks come amid reports that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar are working on forming an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
