The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has summoned Professor Bashir Garba, Vice-Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), over allegations of poor implementation of the university’s 2023 budget.
According to the committee, the university management not only performed poorly in executing the approved budget but also failed to submit critical financial documents required for legislative oversight.
The summons, issued on Friday by the committee chairman, Hon. Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), mandates Garba and his top management team to appear before lawmakers on December 8.
Fulata warned that failure to comply could lead to more drastic action, including the issuance of a warrant of arrest.
“We are not out to persecute anyone, but we will not hesitate to direct the inspector-general of police to effect his arrest if he neglects this invitation or appears without the necessary documents on Monday, December 8,” Fulata stated.
He explained that during an oversight visit to the university, the committee encountered what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to withhold operational and financial records, hindering efforts to conduct a transparent on-the-spot assessment.
Fulata further alleged that despite several official requests, the vice-chancellor had repeatedly refused to submit documents relating to the implementation of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 budgets.
During the committee’s visit, the VC was reportedly absent, and the officers present were said to be unprepared and unable to provide documentation covering the institution’s activities in the last three years.
He stressed that reviewing past budget performance is crucial for the National Assembly to make informed decisions about the university’s needs and funding challenges.
Fulata also cautioned university administrators across the North-West against discriminatory practices in employment, staff promotion, or student admissions, reminding them that fairness and transparency are non-negotiable
