ABUJA — As part of activities marking its midterm anniversary, the Senate has outlined its key achievements and reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Between June 13, 2023, and June 12, 2025, the upper chamber introduced a total of 983 bills, comprising both executive and private member initiatives. Of these, 108 bills were successfully passed into law.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) highlighted the legislative strides made in the first half of the 10th National Assembly. He said the Senate has strategically leveraged its constitutional mandate to enact legislation that supports Nigeria’s fiscal stability, political development, and economic growth.
According to Bamidele, the 2024/2025 legislative year recorded the initiation of 506 bills, reflecting a 6.07% increase compared to 477 bills in the previous year. Notably, 83 bills were passed into law during the same period, compared to just 25 in 2023/2024—marking a remarkable 232% increase in enacted legislation.
He further noted that the number of executive bills addressed doubled from 13 in 2023/2024 to 26 in 2024/2025, while private member bills rose from 464 to 480 during the same timeframe.
The 10th National Assembly, which includes both the Senate and House of Representatives, was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, following the election of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate President and Hon. Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Also elected were Senator Barau Jubrin as Deputy Senate President and Hon. Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker.
Bamidele provided additional legislative statistics, noting that by the 2024/2025 session, 89 bills were awaiting first reading compared to 135 previously; 230 bills were awaiting second reading, up from 45 the year before. The Senate also confirmed 116 appointments in 2024/2025, down from 215 in 2023/2024, and resolved 80 petitions, up from 50 in the prior session.
He reiterated the Senate’s dedication to comprehensive electoral reform and other legislative priorities aimed at strengthening democratic governance ahead of the 2027 elections.
