Vice President Kashim Shettima has disclosed that some individuals from Borno State once accused him of attempting to assassinate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through traditional outfits he gifted to him during the 2023 election campaign.
Speaking in Abuja at the launch of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, Shettima said the allegation surfaced just three months after Tinubu assumed office.
According to the Vice President, he had provided the President with Borno-style traditional clothing and caps during the APC campaign tours across northern Nigeria to help him connect better with northern audiences. The outfits reportedly became popular among Tinubu’s aides, who requested additional sets.
However, Shettima revealed that some people from Borno later visited Tinubu and warned him against wearing the clothes, alleging they had been spiritually manipulated to endanger his life and pave the way for Shettima to become president.
Recounting the incident, Shettima said Tinubu dismissed the claims, noting that when the clothes were gifted, neither of them had secured the APC presidential ticket. To further reject the allegation, the President reportedly continued wearing the outfits for an entire week.
The Vice President described the episode as an example of the growing culture of suspicion within Nigeria’s political circles, lamenting that distrust now increasingly shapes political relationships.
Shettima contrasted the incident with an earlier story shared by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, who recalled how his family regularly sent gallons of fura to Gowon during his time as Head of State without any suspicion attached.
He praised Gowon as a symbol of national unity and highlighted enduring initiatives such as the National Youth Service Corps as part of the former leader’s lasting legacy.
