Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka is set to chair the 32nd anniversary celebration of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), where key figures and institutions involved in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle will be honoured.
The commemorative event, scheduled for May 20 at the MUSON Centre in Onikan, Lagos, will also feature the public presentation of a memoir titled The NADECO Story, written by NADECO General Secretary Ayo Opadokun.
According to organisers, the celebration is aimed at reflecting on NADECO’s role in the fight for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 presidential mandate and the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria.
Retired General Theophilus Danjuma will serve as the chief launcher of the memoir, while the Olubadan of Ibadan, Rasheed Ladoja, will attend as Royal Father of the Day.
Opadokun described the anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate the sacrifices of those who resisted military rule and defended democratic ideals in Nigeria. He noted that the event would honour journalists, activists, civil society groups, academics, business leaders, retired military officers, and the 54 signatories to NADECO’s inaugural communiqué in 1994, including President Bola Tinubu.
Posthumous honours will also be awarded to late democracy icons including MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Adekunle Ajasin, Abraham Adesanya, and Anthony Enahoro.
Speaking on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Opadokun acknowledged that the country still faces challenges but insisted that democratic governance remains preferable to military rule, expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future.
