Mexico City’s streets turned from jubilation to tragedy on Tuesday as three people died from suffocation in huge crowds celebrating Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador, which propelled the national team into the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time since 1986.
The victims, a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man were among more than one million fans who flooded the capital, particularly around the iconic Angel of Independence monument along Paseo de la Reforma. Emergency services responded to reports of three unconscious individuals at separate locations in the area. Paramedics administered first aid and CPR before transporting them to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada extended her condolences to the victims’ families and pledged city support in the coming days. “We call on all supporters to celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy,” she said. Earlier in the day, Brugada had urged fans to avoid the Angel of Independence due to expected overcrowding and to choose alternative celebration spots.
Festivities erupted across the city, including outside Estadio Azteca, with fireworks lighting up the night long after the final whistle. The win marked a historic milestone for El Tri, setting up a potential Round of 16 clash against England, should the Europeans defeat DR Congo.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths as the country continues to ride the wave of national pride from its breakthrough victory.
