US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could resume military strikes against Iran if Tehran fails to meet expectations in the ongoing indirect negotiations for a new agreement.
The remarks come as Iran, through intermediaries, submitted a proposal that separates immediate maritime and sanctions-related issues from longer-term nuclear discussions.
“If they misbehave, if they do something bad, right now we’ll see. But it’s a possibility that could happen,” Trump stated.
He added that he had been briefed on the general concept of the proposed deal and is now awaiting the precise wording from negotiators.
According to Iranian officials, the initial phase of the proposal focuses on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the US blockade, withdrawing American forces from the region, releasing frozen Iranian assets, providing sanctions relief, and arranging compensation.
Nuclear-related issues would be addressed in a subsequent stage of talks.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has faced significant restrictions in recent months, disrupting international shipping and energy markets.
Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the Iranian proposal, stating on his social media platform that Iran has not yet paid a sufficient price for its actions.
Although the US and Israel halted bombing operations several weeks ago, no formal agreement has been reached to end the conflict.
Iran continues to insist that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, while the United States maintains that any final deal must permanently prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
