The Management of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has announced the tragic death of three students and one staff member in a fatal road accident along the Calabar–Itu Highway.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onen Ebri Onen, the institution confirmed that the accident involved 24 students — mostly executive members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) — and one staff member, who were returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The crash, which occurred at Odukpani Local Government Area, claimed the lives of:
Comrade Solomon Uya, Director of Sports, Students’ Union Government
Comrade Lucky Erim, a student of the Department of Chemistry, President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association, and President of Presidents
Comrade Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management
Mr. Anthony Arikpo, the driver of the vehicle and a staff member of the university.
The surviving students are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals in the state.
The Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Professor Francisca Bassey, accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Stella Maris-Okey, visited the injured students on Friday night and stayed with them into the early hours of Saturday to ensure they were receiving proper medical care.
Expressing deep shock over the incident, Professor Bassey extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the injured students and their families of the university’s full support and commitment to their recovery.
“The entire UNICROSS community mourns with the bereaved families and prays for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed and the swift recovery of those receiving treatment,” the statement concluded.
