World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has arrived in Spain ahead of the scheduled docking of the MV Hondius cruise ship in Tenerife following a hantavirus outbreak onboard.
Three passengers — a Dutch couple and a German woman — have died from the rare disease, while several others reportedly fell ill during the voyage.
Health authorities confirmed that those infected tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus, the only known variant capable of human-to-human transmission, raising global concern.
The Dutch-flagged vessel, carrying about 150 passengers and crew members, is expected to arrive in Tenerife on Sunday, where coordinated health and safety measures have been arranged for disembarkation and repatriation.
Tedros stated that there were currently no new symptomatic cases onboard, according to updates from the ship’s captain and WHO medical personnel. He added that the WHO continues to monitor the situation closely while maintaining that the overall risk to the Canary Islands and the global population remains low.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to meet Tedros before the WHO chief joins Spain’s health and interior ministers in Tenerife to supervise emergency response operations and public health protocols.
