The Yobe State Police Command has expressed deep concern over the growing wave of cybercrime and internet-related offences spreading across all 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
This alarm was sounded by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, during a one-day Cybersecurity Symposium held in Damaturu.
According to SP Abdulkarim, the police have recorded at least six major cybercrime cases in the last five months, many of which targeted the reputations of individuals—particularly political leaders and prominent business figures.
“In the past year, we’ve handled numerous cybercrime cases, with many focused on damaging the public image of politicians, businesspeople, and other individuals,” he said.
He noted that the trend points to a worrying rise in cybercrime activity across the state, adding that several of the reported cases are already undergoing prosecution in court.
SP Abdulkarim urged the public—especially social media users—to be more vigilant in their online interactions and adopt stronger digital security practices.
“We strongly advise all citizens to enable two-factor authentication on their accounts. It is an essential step in protecting against hackers and cybercriminals who take advantage of weak security systems,” he warned.
The symposium, themed “Contemporary Challenges and Solutions,” was organised by the Office of the Special Adviser on Policy Delivery to the Yobe State Government in collaboration with the Office of the State Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technology.
