Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of using state institutions to suppress political opponents rather than tackling corruption within his administration.
In a statement shared on social media Friday, Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, cited the recent arrest of Professor Usman Yusuf, a vocal government critic, as evidence of a politically motivated crackdown on dissent.
“Two days ago, the nation was jolted by the arrest of Professor Usman Yusuf, a fierce and unyielding social critic,” Atiku wrote, arguing that while the charges against Yusuf stem from the previous administration, they are now being selectively enforced to silence opposition voices.
The former vice president criticized the Tinubu administration for what he described as a double standard in its anti-corruption efforts. He alleged that while the government shields its allies under investigation for corruption, it weaponizes legal cases against critics.
“It is absurd that while the administration shelters those under investigation, it continues to exploit state institutions to stifle dissent, all under the false pretense of combating corruption,” Atiku stated.
He further accused President Tinubu of prioritizing political consolidation over addressing Nigeria’s urgent challenges, alleging that the justice system is being manipulated for political gain.
“Even to the most inattentive, it has become glaringly clear that Tinubu is not waging a war on corruption—he is waging a war on the opposition, manipulating the system for his own political advantage,” Atiku asserted.
The arrest of Professor Yusuf has sparked widespread reactions, with many questioning the timing and motives behind the detention. Yusuf, known for his outspoken criticism of the Tinubu administration, remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s political discourse.
The presidency has previously dismissed similar allegations from Atiku, labeling them as politically motivated and lacking merit.
