As the dust settles on the compulsory retirement of nine judicial officers in Imo State over allegations of age falsification and misconduct, former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Imo State, Chief Soronnadi Njoku, SAN, has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to expand its recent sanitization exercise beyond Imo to other states and all superior courts of record across the federation.
Chief Njoku made this call in a chat with bibncollar.com this Saturday afternoon, stating that the NJC’s bold actions in Imo should mark the beginning of a nationwide judicial integrity campaign, rather than an isolated cleanup operation.
“While I commend the NJC for the action taken in Imo State, I strongly urge that this sanitization exercise be extended across the entire Judiciary—especially to other superior courts of record like the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court, and the High Courts of the remaining states in Nigeria,” he said.
The respected Silk emphasized that the rot in the Judiciary is not limited to Imo State or judicial officers alone, but also exists in other States and among judiciary staff in registries and administrative departments, many of whom have been accused over time of aiding forgery, manipulation of records, and unethical practices that undermine justice delivery.
“The NJC must also beam its searchlight on registry staff and judiciary workers nationwide. Without extending the exercise to this class of personnel and to other States, it will not be a wholesome sanitization,” Chief Njoku insisted.
His comments come in the wake of increasing public scrutiny following the judicial tsunami that took place in Imo State — wherein 9 judges were compulsorily retired based on age falsification and 9 others cleared of age falsification allegations.
Legal commentators have hailed the NJC’s decision as a step in the right direction but echo the sentiment that a piecemeal approach will do little to restore full public confidence in the Judiciary.
Chief Njoku’s intervention is already generating interest within legal circles, with many lawyers noting that his recommendation reflects the urgent need for structural reforms, transparency audits, and ethical enforcement across every level of the judicial system.
“This is a historic opportunity for the NJC to reposition the Judiciary in line with the demands of justice, discipline, and democratic accountability,” he added.
As calls for systemic reform grow louder, the NJC is expected to issue further statements or take broader action in the coming weeks.
