India has announced an immediate ban on sugar exports that will remain in effect until September 30, aiming to protect local supplies and keep domestic prices stable.
The directive, issued late Wednesday, allows only a few exceptions, including shipments already underway and exports carried out under government-backed food security agreements with other nations.
Authorities said the decision was influenced by fears that the upcoming sugar harvest, expected to begin around October, may suffer due to below-average monsoon rains linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon.
The ongoing conflict involving Iran has also added pressure to India’s economy. As a major importer of Middle Eastern energy and fertilisers, the country faces growing uncertainty over economic growth and rising import costs.
Government figures show that India’s sugar exports have declined significantly in recent years. Exports hit a record 11 million tonnes in 2021–22 before dropping to 6.3 million tonnes in 2022–23. Shipments then plunged to 100,000 tonnes in 2023–24, later recovering slightly to around 900,000 tonnes in 2024–25.
