Clarifies Port Harcourt Selection Was Not Based on Bidding or Payment
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has refuted claims credited to the Administrator of Rivers State suggesting that the state government paid for the hosting rights of the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference (AGC), slated to be held in Port Harcourt.
In a statement issued by Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Chairman of the 2025 NBA AGC Planning Committee, the association clarified that the decision to hold the conference in Port Harcourt was made as far back as August 2024, and that the choice of host city was not subjected to any bidding process or tied to financial commitments.
“There is no such thing as hosting rights for the NBA AGC, and there is no representation by the NBA that the Conference must be held in any city based on payment,” the statement read.
The NBA explained that due to the substantial cost of organizing the AGC, the planning committee often seeks unconditional support from both public and private entities that align with the association’s vision. Over the years, NBA conferences have enjoyed contributions from state governments, corporate bodies, ministries, departments and agencies, typically through gifts, sponsorships or partnership as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.
According to the statement, the support received from the Rivers State Government was purely a financial gift, and not in exchange for any supposed hosting rights.
“We are committed to delivering a world-class conference to members of the Bar and will not be drawn into any unnecessary controversy over this issue,” Obegolu stated.
The 2025 NBA AGC is expected to be a major event, bringing together thousands of legal professionals from across the country and beyond.
