Three weeks after its controversial primaries, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) remains embroiled in accusations of vote-buying and high-handedness in its candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
On Tuesday, the party formally invited its disaffected aspirants to the national secretariat to sign an indemnity form, barring them from approaching the courts over the outcome of the primaries.
The invitation, issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, reads: “You are invited to the media coverage of NDC candidates signing of indemnity form. Date: Tuesday, 16th June, 2026. Venue: NDC party Secretariat. Time: 2pm.”
The move comes barely a week after the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson, dismissed the allegations of ticket trading as “cheap blackmail” designed to tarnish the party’s image.
Dickson maintained that all candidates emerged through due process based on stakeholder recommendations, insisting there was no manipulation in the selection exercise.
While acknowledging no rift with the party’s presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Dickson urged the latter to rein in his supporters, popularly known as the Kwankwasiyya Movement, over what he described as derogatory remarks against the party.
Meanwhile, NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas announced the establishment of a presidential campaign council fund to finance the party’s 2027 campaign machinery. He stressed that the era of resources being concentrated in the hands of a single individual was over.
“As we prepare for the campaigns, it will not be business as usual,” Cleopas said. “Our focus remains squarely on the 2027 polls, and no distraction will derail us.”
