The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers State, labeling it unconstitutional and a dangerous political precedent.
In a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP argued that the situation in Rivers had not deteriorated to a level that warranted such drastic action. The party accused the president of using emergency powers arbitrarily, driven by political interests rather than genuine concern for governance and security.
“The invocation of Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution in this context is, at best, an abuse of executive power. The conditions required for such a declaration have not been met, making this move appear more like political manipulation than a response to any genuine crisis,” the statement read.
The NNPP questioned the president’s judgment, suggesting that his action contradicts the democratic principles he claims to uphold.
“Why the rush to impose a State of Emergency? Does this decision not undermine the rule of law? By taking such a rash step, has the president not demonstrated a lack of understanding of the long-term consequences? Or is this simply about advancing his party’s political interests ahead of 2027?”
The party warned that the decision could have severe economic and security implications, particularly in the Niger Delta region, where instability could disrupt oil production, Nigeria’s primary economic driver.
Highlighting past events, the NNPP drew parallels with the political crisis in Kano State, where it claimed a similar ploy was averted due to the restraint exercised by Governor Abba Yusuf and the people of Kano.
The statement urged the National Assembly to reject what it described as a “presidential coup” against a duly elected government in Rivers State. It also called on Nigerians to remain vigilant against actions that could undermine democracy, warning that arbitrary decisions and political impunity must not be allowed to take root.
The NNPP concluded by demanding an immediate reversal of the State of Emergency and urging all democratic institutions to resist any attempt to erode the nation’s hard-earned democratic governance.
