Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District under the Labour Party, has urged northern politicians with presidential ambitions to wait until 2031 before contesting.
Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Imasuen emphasized the importance of respecting the informal power-sharing arrangement between the North and the South, which he said has guided Nigeria’s political stability over the years.
“There’s an established understanding—written or unwritten—that the presidency rotates between the North and the South, each holding power for eight years,” he stated. “Those aiming to run in 2027 from the North will face resistance because it is expected that the South should be allowed to complete its turn.”
He pointed out that during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, despite criticisms of his leadership, the South respected the rotational principle and allowed him to complete his full term.
“Even though I didn’t support Buhari’s policies and believe he achieved very little, everyone still allowed him to complete his eight years. The North didn’t agitate for an early return to power then, and the same principle should apply now.”
Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership style and expressed confidence in his re-election prospects.
According to the senator, Tinubu has shown remarkable courage in governance, particularly in pushing through tax reforms despite fierce opposition.
“We have a president who is demonstrating real courage. During the tax reform debates, even behind closed doors in the Senate, tensions were high—there were heated arguments, harsh words, and strong opposition. But President Tinubu didn’t back down. He insisted on doing what was right for the country, even at the risk of losing northern political support.”
Imasuen also commended the president’s commitment to conducting a credible national census, noting that it was a bold move considering the sensitivities surrounding population figures in Nigeria.
“Many leaders avoid the census issue because it’s politically risky. But Tinubu has insisted on an accurate count, regardless of how it may affect political dynamics. That’s leadership. That’s courage,” he concluded.
