Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, has explained the reason behind the slowdown in momentum of the political coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, Ardo revealed that the coalition is currently grappling with an internal crisis over ideological direction and strategy.
He disclosed that prominent political figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), as well as former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi—are in talks to form a united front ahead of the 2027 polls.
Ardo explained that while the coalition remains intact, it is divided over the path to take in challenging the incumbent. He noted that the primary disagreement lies in whether to join forces under an already existing political party or to establish a brand new one.
“The coalition is still standing. At this formative stage, it’s normal to experience hiccups, but these things tend to resolve with time,” Ardo said.
“When I talk about ideology, I mean our approach to the politics. Most members and leaders of the coalition support merging with an existing party, while a different bloc—of which I am a part—believes we should register a completely new political party.”
He emphasized that, although the final decision rests with the coalition’s key stakeholders, his faction firmly believes that forming a new party is the most effective strategy for political transition and potential victory in 2027.
“For us, the path of creating a new political platform offers the best chance of success,” Ardo concluded.
