A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to apologize to the Senate in order to resolve the ongoing impasse and regain her seat.
The Senate had previously set a written apology as one of the conditions for her reinstatement, but the Senator has yet to comply.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the coalition, led by Convener Martins Onyebuchi and Co-Convener Alhaji Mohammed Audu, emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution. They noted that Senate President Godswill Akpabio has demonstrated a willingness to maintain stability and equality within the legislative body.
“We urge Senator Natasha to take this opportunity to make amends and restore order. The Senate operates under established rules and procedures, which must be respected,” the statement read.
The CSOs commended Senator Natasha for adhering to protocol during a recent international event, urging her to adopt a similar approach in resolving her issues with the Senate. They also cautioned against seeking external intervention, stating that internal mechanisms should be prioritized for conflict resolution.
“As advocates for women’s participation in politics, we support fairness and stability, not emotional appeals or external interference. Allegations of sexual harassment should not be used to justify non-compliance with Senate rules,” the coalition stated.
The group further expressed confidence in Senator Akpabio’s leadership, describing his commitment to peace and governance as commendable.
“We must move forward with patriotism and prioritize national interests above individual grievances. A peaceful resolution is possible if all parties act in good faith,” the statement concluded.
