Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dele Momodu, has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a threat to democracy.
Tinubu’s directive, which includes suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state House of Assembly for six months, has sparked widespread criticism.
Speaking on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television program on Monday, Momodu joined a growing number of voices opposing the president’s actions.
“I find this very unfortunate. I know President Tinubu very well. Although we have never been in the same party, we were together in exile, and he fought valiantly for democracy. It is embarrassing that a pro-democracy leader is now overseeing actions worse than dictatorship,” he said.
Momodu urged Tinubu to reconsider his stance, warning that Nigeria’s democracy was at risk.
“I’m pleading with President Bola Tinubu: Please don’t kill democracy in Nigeria. Those who truly care about him must tell him this. I have never asked him for anything, but we once admired his role in the democratic struggle, and now, that legacy is being eroded,” he added.
The media mogul also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using intimidation tactics against the opposition and cautioned Tinubu against allowing political deception to influence his leadership.
“People are misleading the president, and he should not let them. The only path to securing a second term is to govern well, not through intimidation,” Momodu warned.
