The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Audi, has ordered the immediate detention of officers accused of extorting N5.2 million from travelers.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Babawale.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the action follows a directive from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who ordered a thorough investigation after a viral social media post alleged that the officers extorted a group of young men traveling from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State to Akure, Ondo State.
Dr. Audi directed that the implicated officers be transferred to the NSCDC national headquarters in Abuja to face the disciplinary committee.
“Their actions were highly condemnable and unprofessional, violating the NSCDC’s Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP),” Audi stated.
He emphasized that a full-scale investigation would be conducted, and any officer found guilty would be sanctioned in line with the Public Service Rules (PSR).
The Commandant-General assured Nigerians that there would be no cover-up, stressing the Corps’ commitment to accountability and zero tolerance for corruption.
He also encouraged the public to continue engaging with the NSCDC and to provide relevant information that could help eliminate incidents of harassment and extortion.
