Multiple people have been killed, several others injured, and hundreds displaced following a series of violent attacks across Zamfara State between Thursday and Friday.
The attacks, believed to be carried out by armed bandits, targeted villages in Talata-Mafara, Bukkuyum, and Kaura-Namoda Local Government Areas (LGAs), according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared the details on X on Friday.
In Tudun-Biri village, Talata-Mafara LGA, gunmen stormed a Fulani settlement around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, setting houses on fire.
“One person was killed, while many residents fled for safety,” the post stated.
Witnesses reported that the assailants arrived in large numbers, torching huts and destroying properties, leaving the community in chaos. Many of the displaced villagers are now seeking refuge in nearby settlements.
Later that evening, at 6:32 p.m., armed men attacked a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) camp in Gurusu, Bukkuyum LGA. However, the vigilantes engaged them in a fierce gunfight.
According to a local security source:
“Three CJTF operatives and three community members were killed. One CJTF member was abducted, while four others sustained gunshot wounds.”
Despite suffering casualties, the attackers eventually retreated into the forest. The situation remains tense, with fears of reprisal attacks.
At midnight on March 21, another attack occurred in Gidan Fulani village, Kaura-Namoda LGA, where gunmen raided the community and rustled an unspecified number of cattle.
“They fired warning shots into the air to scare people before driving the cattle away,” a resident said.
Security sources report that efforts are ongoing to track down the attackers and recover the stolen livestock. Authorities have increased surveillance in the affected areas, while local vigilante groups have stepped up patrols to prevent further violence.
The Zamfara State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the attacks.
