The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Friday, swore in six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
With this swearing-in, all REC vacancies across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have now been filled, according to Daily Post.
Addressing the appointees during the ceremony, Prof. Yakubu emphasized the importance of their roles, urging them to carry out their duties in strict adherence to the electoral legal framework.
“The conduct of elections is not only a huge responsibility but also a sacred duty,” he said. “As RECs, you represent the Commission in the various states where you will be deployed. The work is demanding, and I urge you to remain focused and principled.”
Among the six appointees are two returning RECs — Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem and Mukhtar Umar Gajiram — who have been reappointed for a second term after completing five years in office. Also sworn in were Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris and Mrs. Feyijimi Saseyi Ibiyemi, both long-serving staff of the Commission.
The remaining two — Chukwuemeka Christopher Ibeziako, a private legal practitioner, and Umar Yusuf Garba, a professional with significant experience in the private sector — are new entrants to the Commission.
“Together, all six of you bring a wealth of experience in electoral administration and public service, which reinforces the Commission’s confidence in your ability to serve in this critical capacity,” Yakubu noted.
He also reminded the new RECs to be guided by the Commission’s regulations, the Code of Conduct for RECs, and all relevant electoral laws as they assume their duties.
