Factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has reiterated the party’s commitment to representing marginalized and underrepresented Nigerians.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during the inauguration of the party’s Directorate for Persons with Disabilities, Abure emphasized that the Labour Party stands apart from other political parties by deliberately empowering those often overlooked in society.
According to him, the LP champions the cause of Nigerians who are typically sidelined in the political space due to physical, financial, or social limitations.
“Our vision is rooted in social democracy. The Labour Party exists for those who have no voice, for people who are ordinarily not recognized in the scheme of things,” Abure stated. “We are intentional about supporting individuals who are disadvantaged—whether due to gender, physical condition, financial status, or any other form of disability.”
Citing a notable example, Abure recalled how a commercial motorcyclist—popularly known as an ‘okada’ rider—won a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2023 general elections under the LP platform.
“This is the only party where an okada rider can become a federal lawmaker,” he added. “Disability goes beyond the physical. Many aspiring leaders are disabled by the exploitative nature of politics in Nigeria. They have the passion, capacity, and vision to serve their communities, but lack the financial muscle or connections to break through. The Labour Party offers them a platform.”
Abure further stressed the need for the party to embody the change it advocates: “If we say we want to change Nigeria, the change must begin with us—starting from the ward level. Charity must begin at home.”
