Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has expressed doubts about Nigeria’s progress, citing deep-seated corruption, rot, and political bias within the police force.
Effiong made this statement on Tuesday via his X handle following the police’s decision to call for the cancellation of a rally in Okene, Kogi State, organized in honor of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The Kogi State Police Command justified its position by citing an intelligence report, urging the event organizers to cancel the rally in the interest of peace.
This comes amid a broader crackdown by the Kogi State Government, which recently banned public gatherings and fishing activities, citing security concerns. The government claimed that fishing-related activities had led to the loss of two lives in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette, all in Kogi Local Government Area.
Despite these restrictions, Akpoti-Uduaghan insisted on visiting her constituency for the Sallah break, dismissing rumors that she had canceled her plans.
Reacting to the situation, Effiong criticized the police’s stance, urging the organizers to defy the directive.
“Nigeria is not improving anytime soon,” he wrote. “The rot, corruption, and partisanship in the police are despicable. The organizers should ignore this useless statement and proceed with their rally. The courts and the law have made it clear that the only role of the police in political rallies is to provide adequate security, not to disrupt them over baseless fears of hijack or violence. I urge Senator Natasha and her supporters to defy the police and the governor.”
