The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has officially recognized the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, as the leader of the party in the zone.
The decision was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Thursday. In a statement issued after the meeting, Forum Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, emphasized that Akume, as the highest-ranking APC member in the region, is well-positioned to lead the party.
Zazzaga, who was part of the APC campaign council in the 2023 elections, commended Akume for his leadership and efforts in uniting the party. He recalled that the Forum had previously urged Akume to be more inclusive in his leadership, following concerns that he was prioritizing his Tiv and Benue kinsmen over other parts of the North-Central. However, the statement noted that Akume had since addressed these concerns and is now fostering unity within the party.
“The North-Central APC Forum appreciates the leadership being provided by Senator George Akume in strengthening the party’s structure in the zone,” the statement read. “As the father of the party here, he has shown magnanimity by reconciling differences and embracing all stakeholders for the greater good of the APC.”
The Forum urged all APC factions in the North-Central—including governors, senators, House of Representatives members, state assembly members, and party chairmen—to align with Akume’s leadership to present a united front in the 2027 elections.
The Forum also reaffirmed its commitment to securing a significant electoral victory for President Bola Tinubu in 2027. It raised its initial pledge of four million votes to six million, expressing confidence that, with Akume’s leadership, the North-Central could deliver an overwhelming majority for the APC.
“Our number one priority is to ensure President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027,” the statement added. “We believe that under Akume’s guidance, the North-Central can contribute six million votes to secure his victory.”
Additionally, the Forum called on stakeholders to resolve internal conflicts within various state chapters of the party. Recognizing that political disagreements are inevitable, the statement urged leaders to prioritize party unity over personal interests.
Addressing the ongoing rift within the Benue APC, the Forum urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to recognize Akume’s leadership and collaborate with him for the party’s progress. The prolonged dispute over party control in Benue has led to divisions, which the Forum believes must be resolved for APC’s overall success in the region.
“The Governor of Benue State, like Senator George Akume, wants the APC to thrive. We urge him to embrace Akume’s leadership in the spirit of unity and collective progress,” the statement concluded.
The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the APC remains the dominant political force in the North-Central, emphasizing that unity and strategic collaboration will be key to achieving electoral success in 2027.
