The South-South Governors’ Forum has demanded the reversal of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the situation does not meet constitutional requirements.
In a statement released on Thursday, the forum—led by its chairman, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State—urged the federal government to adopt a peaceful approach to resolving the crisis.
“To ease tensions and pave the way for lasting peace, we call for the immediate reversal of the state of emergency,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the president’s constitutional responsibility to maintain law and order, the governors insisted that the crisis in Rivers State should be addressed through legal and constitutional means.
“The South-South Governors’ Forum is concerned that the current political situation in Rivers State does not meet the constitutional criteria for a state of emergency, as outlined in Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution,” the forum stated.
The governors also rejected the suspension of democratic institutions, emphasizing that the constitution provides clear procedures for the removal of a governor or House of Assembly members.
“The time for dialogue is now,” the statement added, urging all stakeholders to remain calm and uphold the rule of law.
