Senator Osita Izunaso, representing Imo West in the National Assembly, has revealed why Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the National Electoral Commission, was unable to announce the results of the 1993 presidential election.
The election, widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s history, was annulled by then-military head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida. Babangida recently released his memoir, Journey in Service, which has sparked both praise and criticism from Nigerians.
The book launch in Abuja was attended by several prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who, alongside others, honored Babangida and made financial contributions to support the publication.
Speaking on the Senate floor on Thursday, Senator Izunaso expressed concern over the lack of recognition for Nwosu, despite his role in conducting the historic election. He noted that while Babangida, who nullified the election, was being celebrated, Nwosu had been largely ignored.
He further referenced a recent decision by the House of Representatives to reject a motion seeking to immortalize the former electoral chief.
“Just recently, former President IBB held an event attended by many, including the current president of the country,” Izunaso said. “Everyone spoke highly of him because he is alive. If Nwosu were to organize a similar event today, Nigerians would likely do the same.”
Highlighting the constraints Nwosu faced under military rule, he added, “Nwosu was the chairman of INEC during a military regime; there was no way he could have announced the results with a gun pointed at his head.”
