The Obidient Movement has strongly refuted circulating reports claiming that Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has agreed to serve as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Monday by Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communication and Media for the movement, the group described the reports as entirely false and misleading. Kazaure emphasized that Obi remains a committed member of the Labour Party and would personally announce any change in his political affiliation if and when such a decision is made.
“The Obidient Movement has received numerous inquiries from both local and international supporters, as well as members of the public, following a media publication alleging that our principal, Mr. Peter Obi, has been offered a running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in a purported new coalition,” the statement read.
“While the story is clearly a fabrication, we cannot ignore its potential to mislead the public. We therefore state unequivocally that there is no truth to the report in any form.”
Kazaure reiterated that Obi’s current coalition engagements are focused solely on addressing the country’s deep-rooted challenges, not political ambition. “Mr. Obi’s participation in any opposition alliance is driven by the shared goal of confronting bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, failing healthcare, and the growing number of out-of-school children—issues that continue to affect millions of Nigerians daily,” she stated.
“We stand for progressive politics—one that prioritizes the people over the pursuit of power. Mr. Obi remains a member of the Labour Party. Should that ever change, he will communicate it himself.”
The Obidient Movement also cautioned against sensationalism and urged the media to focus on nation-building rather than speculation. “At this critical juncture, we call on all Nigerians, including the media, to direct their efforts toward building a better country,” the statement concluded.
