The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to remarks by Senator Ali Ndume, who cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against premature endorsements for the 2027 presidential election.
Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, raised concerns during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, on Sunday. He warned that early endorsements could be insincere and may distract the president from his current mandate.
“It is too early to start endorsing President Tinubu for 2027. The President should be wary of people rushing to pledge loyalty or push endorsements. These things may not be sincere, and they can distract him from focusing on the important work ahead,” Ndume said.
He recalled that former President Goodluck Jonathan received the backing of 22 governors under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015 but still lost re-election to the APC’s Muhammadu Buhari, suggesting that endorsements do not always translate to electoral success.
Ndume’s comments sparked speculation about possible party backlash, but the APC has dismissed any claims of disciplinary action against him.
In a reaction, APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the party respects Ndume’s right to express his views and reaffirmed the senator’s standing within the party.
“Senator Ndume is a respected member of the APC. He has made comments in the past, some of which were critical, but that doesn’t mean he is acting against the party. The APC believes in internal democracy and freedom of expression, provided it aligns with our core principles,” Ibrahim told the BBC.
He added that the party welcomes constructive criticism from members, describing it as vital to strengthening internal democracy.
