Unpretentiously stated, politics is a roguish business. Nigeria’s politics has been characteristically impish notwithstanding strident efforts made overtime to introduce hygienic politics. The recent enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026 is unarguably the latest effort to introduce a culture of orderly power play politics beginning from regulating the conduct of political parties in the conduct of primary for election of their candidates. Section 86 of the Electoral Act, 2026 enacts that “All direct primaries shall be conducted in accordance with the guidelines of each political party” while section 87(1) provides that “A political party that adopts a consensus candidate shall…
The crisis fears rocking the All Progressives Congress in Abia State appear to be easing following the peaceful conduct of the party’s House of Representatives primary elections, which produced several unopposed candidates, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. Kalu secured the APC ticket to represent Bende Federal Constituency for a third consecutive term in the House of Representatives, while Onyejeocha emerged as the party’s candidate for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in her bid to return to the National Assembly for a fifth term. Onyejeocha represented…
Renowned environmental activist and Executive Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation, Nnimmo Bassey, has declared that Nigeria was economically and socially better off before crude oil became the nation’s primary source of revenue. Speaking on Monday in Port Harcourt during the 2026 Correspondents’ Week organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bassey said the country’s overdependence on petroleum wealth destroyed agriculture, weakened infrastructure development and entrenched economic dependency. The event, themed “The Imperatives of Comprehensive Cleanup of the Niger Delta Environment: Role of the Media,” was supported by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, operator of…
Petitioner: Tosan Barbara Onwubiko Date: 18th May, 2026 To: The Chairman, Board of Trustees, Nigerian Bar Association, Plot 1101, Mohammadu Buhari Way, Central Business District, Abuja, F.C.T., Nigeria. 1. INTRODUCTION I, the undersigned, a financial and concerned member of the Nigerian Bar Association, hereby submit this petition due to constitutional breaches in Section 8,10,11, and 12 Part III, Second Schedule of the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended 2025), by the ECNBA, to draw the attention of members of the Board of Trustees to grave irregularities in the conduct of the Electoral Committee of the NBA 2026 [ECNBA] and to seek…
By Tosan Barbara Onwubiko On May 8, 2026, I raised concerns about the ECNBA’s disregard for strict constitutional provisions, specifically the inclusion of one Magaji Tijjani as a qualified candidate in ECNBA Notice 7b, despite his non-compliance with the mandatory requirements of ECNBA Notice No. 2. As expected, my concerns were met with compromising silence. Section 12, Part III, Second Schedule of the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025) states: _“ Every Aspirant shall submit an Expression of Interest for the office he intends to occupy to the ECNBA…” ECNBA Notice No. 2 reinforced this by mandating:_ “All persons…
Chelsea’s appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager has offered supporters a boost after their disappointing FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City. The Blues were beaten 1-0 at Wembley, with Antoine Semenyo scoring the decisive goal. The former Real Madrid boss is set to replace Liam Rosenior at Stamford Bridge, but he faces a significant rebuilding task if Chelsea are to return to competing for major honours. Several players could reportedly be shown the exit door as Alonso reshapes the squad. Goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have both struggled for consistency, leaving Chelsea with concerns between the posts. Defenders…
Kenyan woman, Hellen Ati, has reacted publicly after her alleged baby daddy, Cubana Chief Priest, lost his bid to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the House of Representatives seat in Imo State. However, during the party primary held on May 16, the incumbent lawmaker, Canice Moore Nwachukwu Omeogo, emerged victorious and retained the party’s ticket after defeating other aspirants.
