Efforts by opposition parties to form a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections remain in motion, as the coalition continues to deliberate on the platform to be adopted.
Barring any last-minute changes, it was gathered that a significant announcement from the coalition is expected this week. However, sources familiar with the ongoing talks say there is still no consensus on two critical issues: the structure of the coalition and the political platform it will adopt.
A high-level meeting held on Sunday drew several prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. Also present were a representative of former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, former Information Minister Professor Jerry Gana, and other northern political stakeholders.
The meeting, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel and convened by the National Political Consultative Group, North, was disrupted by a delegation from Jigawa State, leading to heated arguments over state representation and temporarily throwing the session into disarray.
While some stakeholders advocated for the creation of a brand-new political platform, others pushed for merging into an existing party.
Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), reaffirmed the group’s commitment to supporting the National Opposition Coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the talks took a surprising turn when Ralphs Nwosu, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claimed that the ADC had been unanimously selected as the coalition’s platform—a statement that reportedly caused confusion among stakeholders.
Further tensions arose when Peter Obi reiterated his intention to contest under the Labour Party, a move seen by some coalition members as contradictory to the spirit of unity being pursued.
As negotiations continue, the coalition appears to be grappling with internal divisions that could determine the viability of its challenge to the APC in 2027.
