Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has debunked rumours suggesting he is planning to defect from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speculation around Otti’s political future intensified in the wake of a wave of defections that recently swept through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State. Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, and his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, formally joined the APC, citing the need to align Delta with the federal government.
At their official reception, Okowa explained the move as a strategic attempt to connect Delta State to Aso Rock, the seat of power in Nigeria.
Reacting to these developments in an interview with Arise Television, Governor Otti laughed off the suggestion that he would follow suit just to gain proximity to the presidency.
“I don’t need to decamp to get close to the centre. In fact, I’m even closer to Aso Rock than some of them,” Otti said. “This is democracy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained consistent with his party choices— from AD to AC to ACN— before the APC was formed. If he kept switching, he wouldn’t be president today. Sometimes, you need to stand for something.”
Otti affirmed that his position within the Labour Party remains firm. “I am not decamping, and my party is not on shaky ground,” he insisted.
However, when asked about the possibility of leaving the LP in the future, Otti offered a cautious response: “I am not God. I cannot say what will happen if there is no Labour Party tomorrow.”
Governor Otti’s political journey has seen him move from the PDP to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), then briefly to the APC, before joining the Labour Party, under which he secured his 2023 electoral victory.
