Lancelot Obiaku, the factional Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, has dismissed claims of division within the party, insisting that the PDP in Imo remains united and focused on offering an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2027.
Addressing journalists at the party’s secretariat in Owerri, Obiaku affirmed that Austine Nwachukwu is the duly recognized Chairman of the PDP in the state, describing his emergence as the product of a transparent and constitutionally guided process.
He emphasized the legitimacy of Nwachukwu’s leadership, noting that the process which brought him to office began with ward congresses held on July 27, 2024, followed by local government area congresses on August 10, and the state congress on August 31. These exercises, according to Obiaku, were openly conducted and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media.
“There were no parallel congresses at any level. These congresses have not been challenged in any court of competent jurisdiction and remain valid within the internal structures of the party,” Obiaku stated.
Reacting to the emergence of another factional leadership on April 28, 2025, Obiaku dismissed it as illegitimate and lacking due process. “No one can simply gather friends in their home and declare themselves interim leaders of the party. That’s not how a serious political organization operates,” he said.
He described the development as a distraction aimed at weakening the party’s ability to function as a credible opposition. He specifically called on members aligned with the Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere-led faction to desist from actions that could destabilize the PDP.
Obiaku reaffirmed that the Imo PDP remains under one umbrella, led by Austine Nwachukwu as Chairman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s leader in the state.
“Since assuming office in September 2024, the current leadership has undertaken critical reforms that have rekindled hope among members and reestablished the PDP as a platform where dreams and democratic ideals thrive—free from imposition and impunity,” he said.
On governance in the state, Obiaku accused the Hope Uzodinma-led APC administration of failing to deliver good governance to the people of Imo. He alleged that in the last 16 months, the state received over N162 billion in local government allocations, yet the funds have not reflected in infrastructural development at the grassroots.
“The administration is at a crossroads—without a Chief Judge, without an Attorney General, and burdened with irregular salary structures for civil servants,” he alleged.
Obiaku vowed that the PDP would remain committed to holding the ruling government accountable, stressing that the opposition’s mission is not just political but driven by the collective interest of Imo people.
