The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has firmly rejected calls for his resignation, insisting he will remain in office despite mounting pressure from some party leaders.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Anyanwu accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah of orchestrating a coordinated effort to unseat him before the end of his tenure, which runs until December 2025.
“There is no vacancy in the office of the National Secretary of the PDP. I remain the substantive National Secretary,” he declared, describing the ongoing dispute as politically motivated and lacking any constitutional basis.
Anyanwu explained that he only took a leave of absence from his role to contest the 2023 Imo State governorship election and had properly informed both the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in writing. “I wrote to the party and to INEC before proceeding on leave. That letter was acknowledged. My deputy merely acted in my stead. At no time did I resign,” he emphasized.
The former senator also raised concerns over attempts to replace him with a nominee from Enugu State, arguing that the position of National Secretary is not only zoned to the South but also micro-zoned to the South-East, specifically Imo State.
“If zoning principles are to be respected, then any replacement must come from Imo, not Enugu. Governor Mbah is pushing a candidate that violates the PDP’s zoning arrangement,” he said.
Anyanwu further alleged that former South-East PDP National Vice Chairman, Ali Odefa, is actively fueling the campaign against him. He noted that Odefa had already been expelled from the party and no longer holds any legal standing. Citing a High Court judgment delivered on January 26, 2025, Anyanwu argued that any actions taken by Odefa or his allies are null and void.
He also accused Governors Makinde and Mbah of attempting to install Sunday Ude-Okoye as National Secretary through illegitimate means, including manipulation of party staff and use of unauthorized venues for meetings.
Responding to speculation about his alleged loyalty to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Anyanwu denied any undue influence, stating, “Yes, Wike is my friend, but that has never affected my loyalty or commitment to the PDP.”
